Why You Need To Remove Rust Before Painting

Jun 16 2022

Whether you’re looking to refresh some old furniture at home, or you want to restore a classic car, it’s important that you remove the old paint properly, especially if it’s covered in rust.

And sometimes there is only so much you can do with a can of WD-40. So put the can down, you don’t need it!

We remove it all – complete paint, sealer, bog and rust removal without abrasives, inside and out.

Why do you need to remove rust before painting?

We’ve seen it far too many times. You have a bit of old rusted metal furniture at home and you decide to make it fresh again with a few coats of paint over the rust. We all love a good home improvement project, but not when it ends up backfiring.

Soon enough you’ll find that the paint starts blistering and peeling off. In no time at all, you’ll be back to a rusty metal surface, no matter how much you spray paint over it.

If you don’t prepare your surface first by removing rust spots, you may as well be putting a bandaid over a bullet wound.

It’s not going to fix the problem, and it won’t last very long.

Without stripping your paint first, you’ll continue to face issues further down the line, and it can end up costing you more money.

Making sure that your metal is rust free before you paint over it is incredibly important, especially for bigger projects such as antique furniture, industrial equipment, and project cars.

To Dip or Not To Dip?

When it comes to removing paint and other nasties from your shell, dipping is the only way to make sure that you can attack the inners.

While other smaller projects may be fine with alternative methods, something as elaborate and complex as a car needs a more intensive treatment.

We can handle stripping, de-rusting, pickling and passivating, as well as a protective coating at the end to help prevent rust.
Our workshop is set up to handle those bigger projects, and we make sure that they come out at the end looking fresh and ready!

Looking for paint stripping for your car restoration?

We handle a whole range of paint stripping projects, but we especially love getting to work on car restorations. We have had the amazing opportunity to be a part of bringing many beauties back to life.

We treat your car as precious as you would, and make sure that you are returned with a metal surface that is ready for the next step in your restoration process.

Depending on the amount of paint and body filler on the panels or body shell, it takes approximately 7-14 days to strip clean to bare metal.

Here is an example from a previous customer of the results of our work.
